How to Prepare for the End of Summer and Beginning of Fall

Have you noticed a change in the weather already? We have! It’s September and that means we’re in the transition month between summer and fall. We love this time of year because the weather is mild, it’s our birthday season and we get to start all our favorite fall activities.

It also means there’s a lot to do this time of year, from decorating your home, to getting out the cold weather clothes. We created a list for how to make this transition as seamless as possible. What else do you do to prepare for fall? Let us know in the comments.

1. Shop for Fall Decor

It’s time to decorate your space as best you can. Going shopping for fall decor is on our to-do list for September. We can’t wait to buy pumpkins to carve and get our place Halloween ready. You don’t have to break the bank to make your residence look amazing for the season. Check out sales at place like Michael’s, Party City or the Spirit of Halloween. And you can always hit up a local thrift store.

2. Dig Out Your Cozy Sweaters

Start going through your closet and bring out all of the colder weather clothes. Find your coziest sweaters and start planning out some cute fall outfits. We’ve been going through our stuff to make sure we find all our sweaters, pants, boots and coats. We’re so excited to wear some of our favorite clothing items.

3. Plan for Fall Activities

Fall is coming up fast and if you’re like us, it’s a busy time of year. Get out your planners to write down the essentials. For us, we want to plan when we’re going to a pumpkin path, a Halloween festival, a brewery and apple picking. Whatever you love to do this time of year, make sure you make time for it.

4. Start Shopping for a Halloween Costume

Who doesn’t love the dress up for Halloween? It’s so much fun finding the perfect costume to wear every year. Whether you’re going to a Halloween party or dressing up to pass out candy, don’t look basic. Go all out and have a lot of fun dressing as something makes you happy.

5. Watch a Scary Movie

Grab your friends, snacks and your favorite blanket. It’s time to pull out your scary movies to find one to stream. We’re big scary movie fans and we’ll watch anything from classics to new releases. While we always watch the Halloween classic movies, which aren’t too scary, we also love to watch some darker movies ready to leave us frightened. On this year’s list: The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

6. Clean Out Your Closet

We already said to get out your fall clothes. Now, it’s time to clean out your closet. Take out all the spring and summer clothes that you never wore and donate them. Make space for the new and give anything you don’t like or need any more to a charity.

7. Buy Your Autumn/Winter Wardrobe

Making space for autumn and winter clothes should start in September. Hit up the sales or go thrift store hunting for a unique treasure. Whatever you prefer to do, just get make sure you’re filling any necessary gaps in your fall wardrobe. It’s always fun to see the fall colors come into stores and search for the best deals. But don’t be wasteful and buy things you don’t actually need. Our trick is don’t buy it unless you can plan what you’ll wear with it while still in the store.

8. Prepare for Shorter Days

Over the summer we wrote a post on Seasonal Depression and our tips to combat it. if you’re in a cooler climate and suffer from season depression, plan ahead. We hope it’ll make the transition to shorter and chiller days much easier.

9. Set a Goal

You don’t have to wait until New Year’s Day to set some goals. Seasonal goals can be just as fun and easy. Ben’s goal is to run a half marathon by the end of November, which will help him prepare for the 2023 Boston Marathon. If you didn’t know, Ben ran the 2022 Boston Marathon. Christy wants to get back into her language studying. She plans on improving her French and Italian. Wish us luck!

10. Schedule Some Downtime

Fall for us is hectic and fun, but we need to schedule some time for relaxation. We love reading mysteries and thrillers this time of year, so some cozy reading with a warm beverage is a must. Another downtime activity is to take care of yourself. It doesn’t matter what self-care means to you as long as you schedule some alone time.

11. Get Hyped for Football Season

The NFL is back! Sunday is football day in our household, even if our team made us sad yesterday. We love the New England Patriots and will cheer on our team all season long. Get your football apparel ready and host a watch party to celebrate this amazing sport being back on TV. If you’re not an NFL fan, college football is fine too.

12. Take Advantage of the Weather

September and October weather is usually beautiful where we are, with November getting chillier. Take advantage of being outside and do everything you want to do before it’s too cold. Whether you want to read outside, go for an autumn hike or just take an evening walk around the neighborhood, make sure to do this while you can. We’re planning on being outside as much as possible.

  1. I’m always sad for summer to end, but I consider fall to be the grand finale of the year, and that makes it so much fun. I’m hustling to get some home improvement projects done so that I can get to fall cleaning and then prepare for the Halloween season ahead. Great post!
